The History of Doc Savage
Doc Savage was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic at Street & Smith Publications in 1933. They wanted to create a hero who was a cross between Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes, and who would appeal to the readers of their pulp magazines. They hired Lester Dent, a prolific pulp writer, to write the stories under the pen name Kenneth Robeson. Dent wrote 161 of the 181 Doc Savage stories that appeared in Doc Savage Magazine from 1933 to 1949. The other stories were written by various ghostwriters, including William G. Bogart and Ryerson Johnson.
Doc Savage was one of the most popular pulp heroes of his time, selling millions of copies and inspiring many imitators and successors. He was also one of the first superheroes, predating Superman and Batman by several years. He influenced many comic book creators, such as Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Roy Thomas, and Steve Ditko. He also inspired other fictional characters, such as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Buckaroo Banzai, and MacGyver.
The Legacy of Doc Savage
Doc Savage's adventures did not end with the demise of his pulp magazine. In 1964, Bantam Books began reprinting his stories in paperback format, with new covers by artist James Bama that gave Doc a distinctive bronze appearance. The reprints were a huge success, introducing Doc Savage to a new generation of readers and sparking a revival of interest in pulp fiction. Bantam also published new Doc Savage novels by Will Murray, based on Lester Dent's original outlines, and by Philip José Farmer, who explored Doc's origins and connections to other pulp heroes.
Doc Savage has also appeared in other media, such as radio, film, and comic books. In 1934, he had his own radio show that lasted for 26 episodes. In 1975, he starred in his own movie, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, played by Ron Ely. The movie was a campy adaptation of his first story, The Man of Bronze, and was not well received by critics or fans. In 1985, he had a cameo appearance in George Pal's last film, The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal. In 2016, it was announced that Dwayne Johnson would play Doc Savage in a new movie directed by Shane Black.
Doc Savage has also been adapted into various comic books by different publishers, such as Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Millennium Publications, Dark Horse Comics, and Dynamite Entertainment. Some of these comics followed the original pulp stories closely, while others updated or reimagined them for modern audiences. Some of the notable comic book creators who have worked on Doc Savage include Roy Thomas, John Buscema, Ross Andru, Mike Sekowsky, Doug Moench, Tony DeZuniga, Steve Englehart, Tom Grindberg , Mark Waid , Phil Hester , Alex Ross , Chris Roberson , and Bilquis Evely . 061ffe29dd
